The Kicking Horse Canyon Project is a multi-phase project that improved safety and mobility over approximately 26 kilometres of two-lane highway. Three phases of work have been completed. The fourth and final phase transformed the remaining section of about 4.8 kilometres, construction that started in 2020.
Phase 4 of the Kicking Horse Canyon Project lies between the previously-completed Phase 3 West (Golden Hill to West Portal) and Phase 1 (Yoho Bridge) sections. Completed in 2024, the project has:
- Upgraded approximately 4.8 kilometres of highway through the most challenging section of the canyon to improve safety
- Realigned 13 curves and widen the highway to four lanes with median barrier and wider shoulders to accommodate cyclists
- Mitigated rock fall and avalanche hazards with bridges, rock catchment ditches and other measures
- Added wildlife exclusion fencing and wildlife passage opportunities to reduce vehicle-animal collisions
