Project Description

The Cowichan District Hospital Replacement Project will result in the design, construction, commissioning, and activation of a new hospital to serve a diverse population that includes the communities of the Municipality of North Cowichan, City of Duncan, Town of Lake Cowichan,  Town of Ladysmith and the broader Cowichan Valley Regional District.

Project Description: 

The Project consists of a replacement community-level hospital, with capacity for 204 inpatient beds, built to modern clinical and technical standards on a greenfield site on Bell McKinnon Road, a few hundred metres from Herd Road in the Municipality of North Cowichan. The facility will provide patient care and programs to address future service needs for the region while including the following:

  • total building area of approximately 46,000 gross square metres;
  • capacity for core inpatient and ambulatory services, including a total of seven operating rooms, and additional procedure rooms and outpatient/ambulatory clinic capacity, expanded diagnostic imaging, and expanded emergency department capacity; and
  • a facility that will be LEED® gold certified with additional building features that will further reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
